O Beloved

O beloved, since Your good looks have seduced me into loving You,
Both heart and soul have fallen into ruin, from head to foot.

Being separated from You Your true lovers endure.
Those who know this longing are only the thirsty and the few.

O my soul, if my Beloved is consumed with loving and drunkenness,
Then I am going to give up piety, and soberness too!

The time of pleasure and joy is the season of wine:
Think of it as war, and the spoils of a work-week awarded to you.

Hafez, if it helps you to kiss the foot of the Beloved, then do it.
Both worlds are waiting for you: the world invisible and the world of grace!

Hafez
